Why subscribe?

If you, like me, feel a powerful connection to and curiosity about the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it, then you’ve come to the right Substack. Whales in My Backyard offers both personal stories of my many, often remarkable encounters with animals, and fictional tales I’ve written to help kids (and adults) develop kindness, empathy, and respect for differences. When and where appropriate, I include factual data as a way to distinguish fact from fiction and to encourage readers to do their own exploring. To be clear, however, this is not a scientific or educational publication. It is a synthesis of all that I’ve learned in my 67 years as a reluctant member of homo sapiens.
